From a Building and Interior Designer Hobart
Have you ever wondered how art can transform a space and make it feel truly alive? As a building and interior designer, I’ve always been drawn to clean, minimal spaces. I love the raw beauty of architecture, the way light interacts with structure, and the serene emptiness that allows the mind to wander. But recently, I’ve been reflecting on the emotional impact of art and how it can bring warmth and personality to a home.
Emotional Art: The Secret to Making Your Home Feel Alive
For years, I avoided incorporating art into my own home and office. The emotional intensity and visual impact of art felt overwhelming. I preferred the simplicity of bare walls and the play of natural light. However, I began to realize that while architecture can inspire awe, art has the unique ability to make a space feel cozy and alive. It connects us to the spaces we inhabit, making them feel more personal and inviting.
Architecture and Light
Architecture is fundamentally about light. When we are in a space, we interact with light, reflecting it, creating shadows, and altering its path. Art does something similar. It changes the scale of a room, influences our perception, and adds layers of meaning. This realization led me to reconsider my approach to art in my home.
Creating Art with Emotional Connection
Art is all about emotion for me, and when I feel that special connection, I try to hold onto it. This connection can happen with any type of art, whether it’s simple or full of color and texture. It’s all about the feeling, and I know it when I experience it. In my home, I want art that is not just functional and bold but also connected to my heart and my family’s.
In interior design, art adds depth, personality, and emotion to a space. It can totally transform a room, making it feel more personal and connected to the people who live there. Mixing modern and vintage pieces can create a unique style that tells a story, brings out specific feelings, and enhances the vibe of a room. The bold and colorful pieces we’ve used in our living room have energized our space, while the romantic, serene, delicate pieces of dried flowers on our toilet’s wall have created a calming atmosphere.
By choosing art that resonates with me emotionally, I can make my home feel more inviting and reflective of my personality. Art isn’t just decoration; it’s a way to connect with my space and make it truly mine.
The Magic of Collaborative Art
I decided to make some big, bold art with my child over a few months. We used huge canvases, some found during council cleanups and some custom-made. One tall piece even hides the fridge and ties the kitchen to the living room. We played with earth paints on white canvas, mixing earthy reds, ochres, blues, whites, beiges, and a bit of green to brighten the kitchen. This project taught me to let go and enjoy the unexpected. Now, our home feels unique and cozy with my child’s art in key places.
That mix of a child’s creativity and an adult’s facilitation can make art special and unique. For us, it continues to be a great experience, learning to go with the flow and embracing surprises. I love creating and then having my child’s art around; it makes our home feel warm and interesting, like we’ve collected pieces for years or bought from a famous artist. The view from the kitchen is especially cheerful and special.
Choosing Natural Materials
Choosing art made with natural materials like timber, wood, cotton, linen, earth paints, and soil adds another layer of connection to our environment. These materials bring a sense of warmth and authenticity to the space and incorporate the consideration of sustainability into the way we choose our art pieces. Creating art on a budget and using upcycled materials has made our process accessible and the results truly one-of-a-kind.
Embrace the Unexpected: DIY Art Projects for Your Home
Incorporating art into your home doesn’t have to be daunting. Think like an interior designer and start small. Choose pieces that resonate with you emotionally and reflect your personal style. Experiment with different materials and techniques, and don’t be afraid to involve your family in the process. Art that is made with love and has a story behind it becomes a cherished family heirloom, passed down through generations.
